Layered lighting: the three layers every room needs

Ambient, task and accent lighting — what each one does and how they work together.

One ceiling light rarely makes a room feel good. Designers build light in layers, so every part of the room is lit for what happens there.

1. Ambient light

The general, overall light: ceiling lights, cove lighting, large shaded lamps. It lets you move around safely. Softer, indirect ambient light is more comfortable than one bright source.

2. Task light

Focused light where you work: a desk lamp, a reading lamp by a chair, lights under kitchen cabinets, mirror lights in a bathroom. It should be bright and placed to avoid shadows on the work.

3. Accent light

Light that highlights: picture lights, spotlights on a textured wall, a lamp inside a shelf. Accent light creates depth and draws the eye to what matters.

Colour temperature

  • Warm white (around 2700–3000 K) feels cosy — living rooms and bedrooms.
  • Neutral white (around 3500–4000 K) suits kitchens, bathrooms and work areas.
  • Cool white (5000 K and above) feels clinical in homes; use it sparingly.

Control

Dimmers and separate switches let one room change from bright and practical to soft and calm. Smart bulbs can do the same with schedules and scenes.
